18 Ontario players selected to Canada Soccer 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup roster

Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team have announced a strong 23-player roster for the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup.

Congratulations to the 18 Ontario players and the organizations that have helped them reach this point.

The 30th anniversary edition of the Concacaf Gold Cup runs July 10 to August 1.

Soccer is Back in Ontario! Leagues and competitions are resuming across the province

The Government of Ontario announced on June 24, it has updated the framework for Return to Play in Ontario.

Now, outdoor team sports, which includes leagues and regular competition, with no specified limit on the number of participants or teams participating, or not need for modified rules of play, can commence.

Member organizations are now well underway in preparing for the outdoor season.

Canada Soccer releases PLAY campaign in support of Canadian soccer community

Canada Soccer has released a public service announcement launching its Return-to-Play campaign in collaboration with its member associations.

The PLAY campaign is a Canada-wide marketing initiative to speak to all Canadians as a call to action for a safe and responsible Return-to-Play, including both those new to the game as well as the vibrant community of participants.

Status update on ‘Theory-Trained’ Coaches

In order to ensure coaches can take the field in 2021, Ontario Soccer has delayed the requirement to complete the practical component of coaching courses.

Coaches who have completed the theory portion of the course, either through a Google Classroom or through the new Canada Soccer Online Grassroots Coach Education Program, will be approved to actively coach in 2021 and classified as ‘theory-trained’ until a practical component can be safely provided.

Member Clubs and Academies can contact their District to verify coaches ‘theory-trained’ status.

The 2021 Ontario Cup Draw has been announced. Nearly 300 teams, across 14 divisions, will chase provincial glory this summer

The iconic Ontario Cup will stage a triumphant comeback in 2021 as the 105th running of the competition is set to commence on July 17.

The draw for the 2021 Ontario Cup has been completed and teams across the province now know their route to a potential soccer for life provincial championship.

Applications are now open for tournaments, festivals, travel forms and hosting exhibition games

Ontario Soccer’s Competition and Travel Management System (CTMS) is the platform used to manage Tournament Applications Forms, Festival Application Forms, Application to Travel Forms and Application to Host Exhibition Games Forms.

With the recent announcement by the Government of Ontario, applications forms for 2021 are once again being accepted.

Don’t forget to submit your nominations for the 2021 Centre Circle Awards and honour someone from your community

The Centre Circle Awards are Ontario Soccer’s highest level of recognition and are presented annually to deserving soccer leaders and organizations nominated on the basis of their outstanding contributions to the development of soccer in Ontario and Canada.

Nominations are now open and the deadline for submitting them are July 15, 2021.

There has been another update on the Rowan’s Law timeline

This July 1, 2021 would have marked the effective date for implementation of Phase 2 of the Rowan’s Law legislation, which requires sport organizations to establish Removal-from-Sport and Return-to-Sport protocols for its athletes.

Recognizing the challenges still faced by Ontario sport, the Government of Ontario is postponing the effective date of Phase 2 of Rowan’s Law from July 1, 2021 to January 1, 2022.

12 Ontario players selected to Canadian Women’s Olympic team

Canada Soccer and the Canadian Olympic Committee unveiled the athletes nominated to represent Canada in the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament Tokyo 2020 from July 21 to August 6.

Twelve of the players selected got their start with Ontario Clubs and Academies.

The third intake window for Applications for Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities’ Sport Relief Fund are now open

In response to the absolute need demonstrated by community sport organizations across Canada, Canadian Tire Corporation (CTC) has committed an additional $12 million to its Jumpstart Charities’ Sport Relief Fund.

Ontario Soccer is encouraging members to apply to the Jumpstart Sport Relief Fund to assist in managing costs.

Six Ontario Match Officials have been selected for the 2021 Canadian Premier League Kickoff Tournament

Canada Soccer announced the match officials that will participate in the 2021 Canadian Premier League Kickoff tournament set for June 26 to July 24 at Investors Group Field in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Among the selections will be six Ontario match officials and one Ontario assessor.

OPDL Charity Shield renamed “OPDL Gary Miller Charity Shield” to mark the one-year anniversary of the soccer leader’s tragic passing

Ontario Soccer and its membership are celebrating and reflecting on Gary Miller’s rich legacy, as a true pioneer and gentleman of the beautiful game in Ontario and across Canada.

Last Thursday was the one-year anniversary of the esteemed soccer leader’s tragic passing and to mark the occasion Ontario Soccer has announced that the prestigious “OPDL Charity Shield” will be renamed “The OPDL Gary Miller Charity Shield” in his honour.

Return to Play Membership Survey Results

In November of 2020, the Ontario Soccer membership took part in a Return to Play survey, which sought input on how Return to Play had been implemented for our sport across the province, during the ongoing public health crisis.

Thanks to the membership of Ontario Soccer, we received a significant response to our Return to Play Survey and that data has directly assisted us in reviewing the impact that the Return to Play Guide and Plan had on the community as well as how membership have managed through the pandemic.

COVID-19 Liability Protection Legislation receives Royal Assent

The Government of Ontario has announced that the Supporting Ontario’s Recovery Act 2020 has now received Royal Assent.

This Act, which is now law, will provide liability protection for workers, volunteers and organizations that make an honest effort to follow public health guidelines and laws relating to exposure to COVID-19.

This topic has been a top priority among amateur sport organizations in Ontario. Ontario Soccer has been actively advocating for months, in front of various key decision making bodies, to protect all levels of amateur sport who are following Return to Play Safety protocols during the global pandemic.
