Ontario Soccer kicks off Pride Month with Pledge of Inclusivity

Ontario Soccer is embracing inclusivity as a priority core organizational value.

As Ontario Soccer strives for a more inclusive game, the organization also recognizes that diversity is a great strength – one that we must uphold by keeping it at the centre of every decision we make.

For our friends in the LGBTQ+ Community, Ontario Soccer is pledging to move towards a more inclusive soccer experience.

There are a few spots left in the next Canada Soccer “C” Licence

Ontario Soccer is please to announce registration for a new Canada Soccer Coach C Licence course, which begins July 5, 2021.

The courses will offer a theory component, which will be delivered online and an in-person component, which will take place at the Ontario Soccer Centre, once it is safe to resume in-person activities under the Ontario Soccer Return to Play Guidelines.

Coaches who obtain this certification will be able to be a Head Coach in some Regional Leagues and Assistant Coach in the OPDL.

Update on Return to Play 2021

The Government of Ontario announced May 20, 2021 that it is easing the restrictions of Outdoor Activities and has released a new three-step re-opening framework.

Organized team sport training, with up to 10 participants, is scheduled to begin in Step 1 of the Government of Ontario’s Roadmap to Re-Opening.

The current, estimated start date for Step 1 (Ontario Soccer’s Phase 1) of the Government of Ontario’s new Opening Framework is June 14, 2021.

2021 registration deadline extended for Ontario Cup and Masters Provincial Championships

Ontario Soccer has extended deadline to register for the 2021 Ontario Cup and Masters Provincial Championships.

The deadline, which was May 26, 2021 has now been extended to June 9, 2021.

The 2021 Ontario Cup will mark the 105th year of the competition. Come be part of the fun this summer.

17 Ontario players selected to Canada Men’s World Cup qualifying
Canada Soccer’s Men’s National team have announced their squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup Qualifiers as Canada continues to build momentum towards Qatar 2022.

17 Ontario players will be part of the squad who will face Aruba on June 5 and Suriname on June 8.

Looking for something new this summer? The Soccer Fitness Trainer Diploma Level 1 has been announced
Ontario Soccer is pleased to announce registration is now open for a new Soccer Fitness Trainer Diploma Level 1 which begins June 19, 2021.

The course will offer a theory component, which will be delivered online and an in-person practical component, which will take place once it is safe to resume in-person activities under the Ontario Soccer Return to Play Guidelines and Public Health Directives.

Ontario Soccer calls on Premier Doug Ford to address the Hidden Pandemic impacting youth athletes across the province
Ontario Soccer urgently renewed its pleas to the Government of Ontario last week, asking them to once again rescind the ban on organized outdoor sports.

With every passing day that children are kept away from soccer pitches, baseball diamonds, basketball courts and other outdoor playing fields and facilities, a mental health crisis of massive proportions grows.

OPDL Charity Shield renamed “OPDL Gary Miller Charity Shield” to mark the one-year anniversary of the soccer leader’s tragic passing
Ontario Soccer and its membership are celebrating and reflecting on Gary Miller’s rich legacy, as a true pioneer and gentleman of the beautiful game in Ontario and across Canada.

Last Thursday was the one-year anniversary of the esteemed soccer leader’s tragic passing and to mark the occasion Ontario Soccer has announced that the prestigious “OPDL Charity Shield” will be renamed “The OPDL Gary Miller Charity Shield” in his honour.

Ontario Soccer takes steps to create a more equitable future for soccer and break down systemic barriers of entry to sport
As one of the country’s largest sports organizations, Ontario Soccer has the responsibility to lead by example in advancing racial equity. We recognize that it’s our responsibility to build a diverse, inclusive, accessible and respectful organization and to ensure our members and volunteers have a voice and the opportunity to full contribute.

Ontario Soccer’s Diversity Advisory Sub-Committee recently shared its report and recommendations to the Ontario Soccer Board of Directors for discussion and review.

Applications for Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities’ Sport Relief Fund are now open
In response to the absolute need demonstrated by community sport organizations across Canada, Canadian Tire Corporation (CTC) has committed an additional $12 million to its Jumpstart Charities’ Sport Relief Fund.

Ontario Soccer is encouraging members to apply to the Jumpstart Sport Relief Fund to assist in managing costs.

Return to Play Membership Survey Results
In November of 2020, the Ontario Soccer membership took part in a Return to Play survey, which sought input on how Return to Play had been implemented for our sport across the province, during the ongoing public health crisis.

Thanks to the membership of Ontario Soccer, we received a significant response to our Return to Play Survey and that data has directly assisted us in reviewing the impact that the Return to Play Guide and Plan had on the community as well as how membership have managed through the pandemic.

COVID-19 Liability Protection Legislation receives Royal Assent
The Government of Ontario has announced that the Supporting Ontario’s Recovery Act 2020 has now received Royal Assent.

This Act, which is now law, will provide liability protection for workers, volunteers and organizations that make an honest effort to follow public health guidelines and laws relating to exposure to COVID-19.

This topic has been a top priority among amateur sport organizations in Ontario. Ontario Soccer has been actively advocating for months, in front of various key decision making bodies, to protect all levels of amateur sport who are following Return to Play Safety protocols during the global pandemic.

Update on Rowan’s Law Implementation Timeline
As a result of the COVID-19 outbreak, the Government of Ontario made the decision earlier this year to postpone the effective date of Part 2 implementation of Rowan’s Law from July 1, 2020 to January 1, 2021.

In light of the resurgence of COVID-19 and the public health measures in place to help slow the spread of the virus, the Government of Ontario has made the decision to defer the effective date of their Part 2 implementation of Rowan’s Law from Jan. 1, 2021 to July 1, 2021.
