Happy New Year!

Many thanks to the Washington Youth Soccer family near and far for their continued support for our mission to bring youth soccer to every corner of our beautiful state. 2020 wasn’t the easiest on any of us, but we are ready and waiting for the moment we can finally come together on pitches across Washington and play the game we and our kids love. As soon as it is deemed safe to do so, soccer will be back in Washington.

While there has been good news in our state and beyond regarding COVID-19, the state government has provided outdoor sport guidelines to help ease us back to normalcy in parallel with improving pandemic conditions–at the moment, only full team practices are allowed in Phase 1 regions. See the latest release from the governor’s office regarding the Roadmap to Recovery, and keep an eye on our Return to Play page for all updates as they pertain to Washington Youth Soccer and our members.

We are, however, pleased to announce that our 2021 Coaching Education courses have been scheduled and are planning to be operated safely in accordance with state and local guidelines. We also partnered with soccer analytics app Platform to organize the Best Kick in Washington contest this month, giving all players the chance to show off their shooting boots and compete for prizes.

Our Virtual Auction, which we started alongside our Year-End Giving Campaign last month, is still going strong with new items being added regularly! Check out what we have up for bid now, and keep an eye on the auction page and our social media profiles for updates!

Finally, we have a great opportunity to assist with groundbreaking research regarding families and youth sports. Our friends at the Utah State University Families in Sport Lab are looking for young athletes and their families to complete a brief survey regarding how they approach and are affected by youth sports.

Again, we can’t thank you enough for your loyalty and continued support during this time. Here’s to hoping the next time you see this email, it’s announcing the return of the beautiful game to Washington.

Governor Inslee released the Washington Roadmap to Recovery plan and accompanying guidelines for outdoor sports earlier this month.

A few things to note about the latest (1/11/21) guideline update for PHASE 1, which all regions are in as of the announcement:

  • Face coverings are required for all players, coaches, and volunteers AT ALL TIMES.
  • Indoor training and practice allowed for soccer if players are limited to groups of 6 in separate parts of the field/court, separated by a buffer zone. Brief close contact (ex: 3 on 3 drills) is permitted. It is preferable for the groups of six to be stable over time. All facilities must calculate allowable participant occupancy by dividing the room size or available floor space by 500 square feet per person.
  • Outdoor team practices, training and intra-team competitions allowed. Scrimmage against other teams or training or practices with other teams is not allowed.
  • No tournaments allowed.
  • All non-essential travel is subject to quarantine.
  • Refer to county administrators and your local field operator before scheduling a practice session.
  • Any previous guidelines that are contradictory to the latest update are no longer applicable.

Keep an eye on our Return to Play page for the most up-to-date information, including weekly Roadmap to Recovery reports.

Our friends at the Utah State University Families in Sport Lab are conducting a study titled The development of perfectionism in youth soccer: The influence of coaches, peers, and parents across the youth sport development timeline (USU IRB# 10569).

The development of perfectionism in youth sport is an important avenue for research to pursue due to its problematic nature. In recent studies perfectionism has been linked with burnout, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and even suicide. Social agents such as parents, peers, and coaches have been highlighted as holding the potential to influence the development of perfectionism in athletes. We want to learn more about these processes in our soccer programs!

If you and your child agree to be in the Utah State study, you will complete an online survey. Your participation is completely voluntary and should last no more than 10 for athletes. If you have more than one child in a Washington Youth Soccer, we would like to learn about you and your oldest child. You and this child can take the survey anywhere with a trusted WiFi connection

If you have questions about the research study, you may contact Dr. Dorsch at Travis.Dorsch. If you have questions about your rights or would simply like to speak with someone other than the research team about questions or concerns, please contact the IRB Director, Nicole Vouvalis, at (435) 797-0567 or irb.
