COVID-19 Liability Protection Legislation receives Royal Assent

The Government of Ontario has announced that the Supporting Ontario’s Recovery Act 2020 has now received Royal Assent.

This Act, which is now law, will provide liability protection for workers, volunteers and organizations that make an honest effort to follow public health guidelines and laws relating to exposure to COVID-19.

This topic has been a top priority among amateur sport organizations in Ontario. Ontario Soccer has been actively advocating for months, in front of various key decision making bodies, to protect all levels of amateur sport who are following Return to Play Safety protocols during the global pandemic.

Government of Ontario moves five regions into new zones

The Government of Ontario has announced that it has moved five regions into new zones under the new Government of Ontario Framework, which is designed to keep Ontario operating safely and to better manage the impact of the global pandemic.

Organizations are encouraged to review the changes and find where their Public Health Unit is in the Government Framework.

Update on Rowan’s Law Implementation Timeline

As a result of the COVID-19 outbreak, the Government of Ontario made the decision earlier this year to postpone the effective date of Part 2 implementation of Rowan’s Law from July 1, 2020 to January 1, 2021.

In light of the resurgence of COVID-19 and the public health measures in place to help slow the spread of the virus, the Government of Ontario has made the decision to defer the effective date of their Part 2 implementation of Rowan’s Law from Jan. 1, 2021 to July 1, 2021.

Two Ontario players named Canadian Youth International Players of the Year

Tajon Buchanan, who hails from Brampton and Jade Rose, who got her start in Markham, have been named the 2020 Canadian Youth International Players of the Year.

The two young players were recognized for their performances and progress as part of Canada Soccer’s National Team programs.

Ontario’s Dr. Nick Bontis elected President of Canada Soccer, Paul Martin elected as Director

Canada Soccer hosted a virtual Annual Meeting of the Members on Nov. 21, after postponing its planned May 2020 event due to restrictions related to COVID-19.

As part of the proceedings, Canada Soccer members elected Dr. Nick Bontis as the 35th Canada Soccer President. Board of Director elections also saw Paul Martin elected as a Director, Ontario.

2020 Centre Circle Award winners announced

Soccer leaders from all over the province were recognized at the 2020 Centre Circle Awards @ Home virtual event on Sunday.

This year’s Centre Circle Awards, presented by Nothers – The Awards Store, was conducted as an online virtual event in accordance with Public Health Orders and was a special evening to honour those who have made an outstanding contributions to the game in our province and country.

Clubs, Academies, Leagues, Coaches, Match Officials, Administrators and those who have dedicated a lifetime to the game, all had a moment to shine in the spotlight of the Centre Circle.

District Presidents / Ontario Registered Academies Working Group Update

In 2019, the Ontario Soccer Board of Directors launched several working groups. One such group, the “DP/ORA Working Group” includes members of the Ontario Soccer Board of Directors, Senior Management and representatives from the District Presidents Forum and Academies.

The assigned task is to develop a plan to realize the objective of integrating Clubs and Academies within the membership and competition structure of Ontario Soccer.

The last online C License Course of 2020 is sold-out. Put your name on a wait list for the next course

The National C License course, will be delivered online, with an in-person date taking place at the Ontario Soccer Centre, at a date to be confirmed.

The course includes online and in-person education. For the in-person portion of the course, attendees will be required to observe regional public health and safety protocols, while properly socially distancing and wearing appropriate personal protection equipment.

Registration is now open for 2021 Outdoor Season

Ontario Soccer has opened the registration for the Outdoor 2021 season in the Ontario Soccer Club & Academy Registry (OSCAR), powered by SportsEngine.

There have been several changes and updates for Outdoor 2021 and organizations are encouraged to review the changes and OSCAR Release Notes for the outdoor season now.

Community Coach Workshops still Available Online

To ensure that the Community Coaching Workshops are more accessible and to allow greater flexibility on when these courses can be delivered, the coaches will be able to work at their own pace to complete the course material.

Online learning is now available for Active Start, Fundamentals, Learn to Train and Soccer For Life.

As Ontario’s Match Officials continue to prepare for the outdoor season with their online learning, Ontario Soccer is sharing another Match Official Panel Discussion from the Ontario Soccer Summit.

In this panel, the game and decision-making all come into play from different perspectives thanks to guests Scott Bowman (Canadian Premier League Match Official), Caroline Szwed (Sportsnet Host and Former Player) and Anthony Capotosto (Toronto FC Academy Director.)

The three have an open discussion regarding the view of decisionm-making from the eyes of a Match Official, Player and Coach.
