Vaughan SC win three Ontario Cup titles in one weekend, Burlington YSC picks up the fourth

Four teams have been crowned Ontario Cup champions, as the provincial championships concluded for a number of divisions in Vaughan this past weekend.

Three of those winning teams hailed from the Vaughan Soccer Club. In a largely unprecedented result, Vaughan won Ontario Cups in the U-18 Boys and Girls divisions, as well as won the U-21 Men’s Ontario Cup. It was the fifth year in a row the Azzurri have won the U-21 Men’s Ontario Cup.

The Burlington Bayhawks won the only other Ontario Cup, downing the Markham Lightning to win the U-21 Women’s title.

Today is the last day to submit expressions of interest for Ontario Soccer Board of Directors

A new Board of Directors for Ontario Soccer will be elected on Oct. 14. 2018.

The Nominations Committee is seeking qualified candidates who are able to contribute to Ontario Soccer, that reflects the values of inclusiveness, respect, integrity, high ethical standards, community building and is player-centered.

Complete candidate packages must be submitted electronically or by mail by end of the day, Wednesday, July 25, 2018.

Tickets go on sale today for Canada vs Dominica game at BMO Field

A Canada will play their first home match in 2018-2019 CONCACAF Nations League qualifying on Oct. 16 at BMO Field.

Canada will face Dominica in the first 2018 home match with a 7 p.m. kick-off. Tickets will go on sale to the public on July 25.

How to watch the U-17 OPDL Cup Finals this Saturday

The U-17 OPDL Cup finals will take place this Saturday at the Ontario Soccer Centre Stadium in Vaughan.

The OPDL Cup, in its second year, is a single-game knockout format, which is intended to introduce another level of intense competition into OPDL.

For those who cannot attend in person, the finals will be broadcast on the Ontario Soccer Livestream. Subscribe and be notified when games kickoff.

L1 Cup finals take centre-stage after dramatic semi-final round

The 2018 L1 Cup took centre-stage this past weekend, with plenty of drama on offer in the Semi-Final stage.

Two of the four semis required exciting penalty kicks tiebreakers to determine winners.

Match Officials host female-only mentor training day

As part of the Long Term Match Official Development roll-out, and in conjunction with Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women and Sport (CAWWS) and with support from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, Ontario Soccer recently launched a pilot for a new Mentorship program.

Ex-FIFA match official Sonia Denoncourt, current National Official Alexis Vaughan and Provincial Official Kim Lee were in attendance last weekend to share their expertise and experiences with young, aspiring and upcoming officials who were in attendance to be trained in mentoring first and second-year officials.

Ontario REX program narrowly defeats League1 Ontario Young Stars

Kaila Novak struck pay dirt in the first half and that would be enough to ensure the Ontario REX program a 1-0 win over the League1 Ontario Young Stars last week.

The Young Stars had plenty of chances to tie it throughout the match but couldn’t find a way through as the best female talent in Ontario was on display for those in attendance at the Ontario Soccer Centre.

Ontario Soccer’s MMRS for Outdoor 2019

On June 9, 2018, upon positive review of beta test results and survey data, the Ontario Soccer Board of Directors approved the move to Phase 2 of the three-phase implementation plan for the new SportsEngine Member Management Registration System (MMRS).

The Board of Directors has approved, effective for the Outdoor 2019 season (for which registration can occur no earlier than Oct. 1, 2018) and for all seasons thereafter, SportsEngine’s MMRS will be the official record of registration for Ontario Soccer.

This launch period all commences the retirement of AIMS which will be maintained for archival purposes only effective Oct. 2019 season. The official retirement of AIMS is effective at the end of the Indoor 2018-2019 season.

Player recommendation process for Talent on Location Days available

The Ontario Soccer High Performance Program has released the player recommendation process for Technical Staff of District Member Clubs and Ontario Recognized Academies.

This is being done so that players within Ontario will have the opportunity to be recommended for Talent on Location Days by a certified and qualified Club and Academy Head Coach or Technical Director.

Canadian Women’s National team to play Brazil Sept. 2 in Ottawa

Canada Soccer’s Women’s National team will welcome Brazil to Ottawa on September 2 for an international friendly ahead of Canada’s FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019 qualification campaign set for October at the 2018 CONCACAF Women’s Championships.

Canada, ranked fifth in the FIFA Women’s World Rankings, will play the 2016 Rio Olympic hosts, ranked seventh, at 2 p.m. on Sunday, September 2 at TD Place Stadium in Ottawa.

Tickets go on sale July 12.

Respect in Sport parent certifications surpass 10,000 in Ontario

Ontario Soccer and Respect in Sport recently reached a milestone for the province.

Over 10,000 parents in Ontario are now certified in the Respect in Sport – Parent Program – a feat that has been accomplished in just under three years time.

The Respect in Sport Parent Program is a one-hour online module for parents and guardians, reinforcing their role in their child’s activities, encouraging positive sport behaviours and providing insight in the various roles other individuals play, such as coaches an officials.

Ontario Soccer believes that the intention of any accessible and inclusive soccer program should focus on providing an opportunity for players in their own community to discover soccer, develop skills and build friendships as part of a team.

This guide will assist clubs, academies and districts with generating awareness about Accessible Soccer as well as assist with understanding the Accessibility for Ontarians with the Disabilities Act.

WATCH – Sheldon Kennedy’s discussion on abuse in sport

After a riveting special screening of Swift Current, presented by Respect in Sport, Sheldon Kennedy joined the audience at the Ontario Soccer Summit 2018 for an intimate question and answer session about the abuse he suffered as a youth athlete and how we can prevent it from happening in soccer.

A former NHL player, Kennedy has been instrumental in bringing governments, public and private sector partners together to influence policy change and improve the way child abuse is handled.
