Mastercard ends meals-for-goals campaign with Neymar, Messi

Sao Paulo (AFP) – Mastercard on Monday said it was changing a campaign in which thousands of free meals were to be given to the needy every time football superstars Neymar and Messi scored goals. Under the scheme, every time the Brazil and Argentina strikers scored, 10,000 meals would be donated to the United Nations World Food Program. The idea, due to run until March 2020, drew fire from many on social media who said it was in poor taste. Brazilian national team coach Tite also criticized it as counterproductive because it put too much pressure on individual stars. The

Ake strike gives Dutch 1-1 draw against 10-man Italy

Turin (Italy) (AFP) – Nathan Ake headed in a late equaliser as the Netherlands held 10-man Italy 1-1 in Monday’s international friendly in Turin between two heavyweights who failed to qualify for the World Cup. Simone Zaza had put Italy ahead after 67 minutes in Juventus’ Allianz Stadium but the hosts were hit two minutes later when defender Domenico Criscito was sent off for a tackle on Ryan Babel. Bournemouth centre-back Ake got the equaliser past the hosts two minutes from time, and almost added a second in injury time. Both sides are rebuilding after failing to reach the World Cup

FIFA boss suggests Qatar could veto enlarged 2022 World Cup

Zurich (AFP) – FIFA’s president indicated Monday that the 2022 World Cup cannot be expanded to 48 teams without agreement from hosts Qatar, while backing further study of the “interesting” proposal.  Speaking just 10 days before the 2018 tournament kicks off in Russia, Gianni Infantino did not categorically say that Qatar has the right to veto an enlarged 2022 tournament if FIFA voters decide in favour of an expansion.  But he said that imposing a 48-team competition on Qatar — which is in the thick of preparations for a 32-nation tournament — would be “absolutely” unfair.  “Obviously, Qatar will need

Frankfurt am Main (AFP) – German airline Lufthansa apologised on Monday over a promotional video for the World Cup in Russia that was actually filmed in neighbouring Ukraine, which is locked in a tense dispute with Moscow. Star-struck: FIFA forced to redo Russia World Cup ad

Moscow (Russia) (AFP) – World football’s governing body FIFA admitted on Monday it will have to redo a fancy TV spot for the finals Russia will be hosting for the first time from June 14. The 45-second ad features artsy graphics and suitably momentous music to get fans in the mood. Billions of people will see it before every game. The plot revolves around a football that flies over the 11 host cities while historic World Cup moments play out on a peculiarly spinning pyramid. How cracks appeared in the joyous French unity of 1998

Paris (AFP) – It is 20 years since the night France won their World Cup at the Stade de France and a powerful myth was born on the streets of Paris. The team representing the famous blue, white and red tricolour flag was also multi-hued. The shirts were “Bleu, Blanc, Rouge,” and the squad that had united to beat Brazil, 3-0, with two goals from Zinedine Zidane, was “Black, Blanc, Beur,” or black, white and French of North African descent. There had been dissenting voices from far-right politicians, yet France fell in love with the icon, Zidane, who was of Algerian
